Education Program
The SOADI 13 Grandmother Moons Diabetes Wellness Curriculum is activities based and inclusive. It has combined traditional wisdom with diabetes awareness education and incorporates Aboriginal, Metis, Inuit and mainstream influences. This curriculum will support Frontline Workers to plan, prepare and present relevant information about diabetes while reflecting Aboriginal perspectives on health and wellness. This Wellness Curriculum has two key learning goals. First, our goal is to provide culturally influenced content while educating on health and wellness as it relates to diabetes. Second, our goal is to influence and inspire Frontline Workers to empower participants with a safe learning environment that helps to nurture self-awareness and enhance their understanding of their own health and wellness and how it impacts themselves and others in their support circles.
The curriculum offers Frontline Workers with a number of individual workshop ideas that are influenced by the 13 Grandmother Moon teachings that integrate relevant, innovative and participatory sessions that can be completed in the order presented; if chosen. Many activities were developed so that they may be used with various topics at various depths to the multi-stages of the life cycle. The curriculum is also intended to offer a level of flexibility and the Facilitator is encouraged to be creative to adapt moons, themes and activities to include teachings of their community’s local culture. This creates the potential of each experience to be individualized so that activities can be selected and presented to groups based on the Facilitator’s topic and theme of choice.
This curriculum is a “living entity” and will be continuously growing and evolving to provide shared “best practices” to serve the Aboriginal, Metis and Inuit communities.
How the curriculum is organized
The curriculum material is typically organized in the following way:
The 13 Grandmother Moons’ Influence on the curriculum This curriculum was deeply influenced by the teaching of Grandmother Renee Thomas Hill. The Moon reflects the “constant change in all Creation” according to Grandmother Renee. We must reclaim knowledge of how to read Grandmother Moon for understanding and awareness in our own lives. It is important for participants to understand how the moon influences our emotions and how sugar levels influence emotions.
This curriculum provides a connection to teaching tools that bring awareness of our original instructions and our roles and responsibilities to ourselves, families, communities and Mother Earth. It is time to remember that the moon reminds us of the concept of preparing for the time to come. Grandmother Moon is our constant companion and reminder, her ever changing face to support us with a lunar heritage full of cycles that mirror our own cycles.
The Frontline Workers are provided with Grandmother Renee’s Moon teachings as a tool to support participants on their personal journey into restoring their mental, spiritual, emotional and physical balance and well-being.
